When most people think about dual citizenship, they probably can’t think of anyone they know who has it. However, while it is still fairly uncommon for “ordinary people” to be dual citizens it’s fairly common among the rich and famous. 

There are many celebrities with second citizenship. This is particularly true when you look at Canadian actors and singers who have made the US their home. Some examples that spring to mind include Ryan Reynolds, Justin Bieber, and Kiefer Sutherland. in fact, since Kiefer Sutherland was born in the UK, he is technically a citizen of three countries! Let’s take another look at some celebrities with second citizenship.

Famous People Who Have Second Citizenship

One of the reasons why famous people are more likely to have second citizenship is that in many cases money can open doors. This is true not just for famous people who often have careers that span different continents, but also for fairly ordinary people who take advantage of golden visa programs. These programs allow regular people to enjoy the same benefits as celebrities with second citizenship, often with a fairly reasonable financial investment. Eric Schmidt

He might not be a rock star or a movie star, but Eric Schmidt is very well known in the tech world as you would imagine for a former CEO of Google. he’s still very active in the tech world as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and he currently calls the island of Cyprus home.

Madonna

Madonna very much is a pop star and has been for nearly 40 years. She’s known around the world for her outrageous style as well as her music, but she’s also one of the biggest and highest profile celebrities with second citizenship. Because she was married to Guy Ritchie, she is a US and British citizen, as are some of her children.

Adam Bilzerian might not be a household name, but he is a world-famous poker player and writer. He was born in the United States, but it has been a dual citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Armenia since 2008. 

Charlize Theron

Many people don’t realize that Charlize Theron is anything other than an American actress. However, she makes it onto this list of celebrities with second citizenship because she was born and raised in South Africa. While she is currently a United States citizen, she has retained her status as a South African citizen as well. Interestingly Charlize’s home language is not English either. Like many South Africans her native tongue is Afrikaans.

Rita Wilson

You might know Rita Wilson better as Mrs. Tom Hanks, but she’s another famous celebrity on our list of celebrities with second citizenship. Miss Wilson’s mother came to the US from Greece, and as a result of this connection both Rita and Tom have been given Greek citizenship.

Angelina Jolie

When you are talking about celebrities who have second citizenship, there isn’t a bigger name than Angelina Jolie. While you might know that her mother was a French model, her second citizenship is actually in Cambodia and was awarded for her humanitarian efforts in the country. Two of her adopted children Maddox and Pax were also born in Cambodia.

Natalie Portman

You probably know who Natalie Portman is, but do you know who Natalie Hershlag is? They are actually the same person. Natalie Portman was born in Israel and moved to the US later in life. She is currently a dual American and Israeli citizen.

There are many ways that you can become a citizen of more than one country. Sometimes it happens at birth, sometimes it happens by choice, and sometimes like some of the celebrities with second citizenship on this list, it is awarded as an honor for things you have done.
